Why are more Americans than ever returning their passports?
Are they becoming less nationalistic? Do they disagree with American foreign policy perhaps?
No, the reason is a much more practical one than that. It’s because of those most horrible words, so horrible that it pain me to say them, it’s because of….Double Taxation. Any American, regardless of where they live, have to make a tax declaration in the US. So Americans pay tax in the country they live in, as well as in the US.
The numbers of Americans giving back their passports has trebled in recent years. New anti-money laundering laws in the USA, called FATCA, mean that the cost and complexity of making a US tax declaration has increased. So, some people decided that it makes life easier to just give up the passport. Also, the US government requires non-US banks to declare any dividends or interest received by American citizens. As a result, some foreign banks have decided not to provide services to American citizens to avoid the additional work this requires. So some Americans living outside the US are finding it difficult to open bank accounts, get mortgages etc. And the response of the US government to this? They have increased the cost of renouncing a passport from 450 dollars to two thousand three hundred and fifty dollars, I suppose to try to deter US citizens from surrendering their passports.

No, la explicación es mucho más práctica que esta. La razón es por culpa de estas horribles palabras, tan horribles que me duele pronunciarlas, es culpa de…. La Doble Tributación. Cualquier Norte Americano, da igual donde viva, tiene que hacer su declaración de renta y pagar impuestos en el país donde viva, y también en los Estados Unidos.
El número de Norte Americanos que ha devuelto su pasaporte se ha triplicado en los últimos años. Las nuevas leyes contra el blanqueo de capitales en EEUU, llamadas FATCA, han significado que el coste y complejidad de hacer una declaración de la renta ha aumentado. Por tanto, algunos Norte Americanos han decidido hacerse la vida más fácil y devolver su pasaporte. Además, el gobierno de EEUU exige a los bancos en otros países declarar cualquier dividendo o interés recibido por los ciudadanos de Estados Unidos. Como resultado de esto, algunos bancos han decidido no dar servicio a ciudadanos Norte Americanos para evitar la administración adicional implicada. Por tanto, algunos Norte Americanos viviendo fuera de EEUU tienen dificultades para abrir cuentas de banco, pedir hipotecas, etc. ¿Y la respuesta del gobierno Norte Americano a esta situación es? Han subido el coste de renunciar al pasaporte Americano de 450 dólares a 2.350 dólares. Supongo para desalentar a los ciudadanos americanos de devolver sus pasaportes.
