Using the word “ball”

Get the ball rolling: It means to start something, a work related project for example. Usually used with the first Word: Let’s. “Let’s get the ball rolling”.

To be on the ball: It means to perform well. Mary is on the ball today. Uses the structure of the verb “to be” plus on the ball. You are on the ball, he is on the ball, etc. It is used in an informal situation.

Red Tape: means that there is excessive or too much administration, paperwork and bureaucracy. Example: It is impossible to start any project in this company because of the amount of red tape involved. Some French businesses have moved to England because there is much less red tape there compared to France.

Get the ball rolling: “empuja la pelota para hacerla rodar”. Significa empezar con algo, un proyecto de trabajo, por ejemplo. Generalmente se usa con la palabra “Let’s” al principio.  “Let’s get the ball rolling”. Empecemos con el Proyecto.

To be on the ball: “estar encima de la pelota”. Tener buen rendimiento. Mary is on the ball today, María está haciendo todo bien hoy. Usa la estructura del verbo “to be” más “on the ball”. You are on the ball, he is on the ball, etc. Se usa en situaciones informales.

Red Tape: Literalmente “cinta roja”. Significa que hay demasiado trabajo de administración. Ejemplo: Es imposible lanzar una proyecto en esta compañía, dado al nivel de administración y papeleo. Algunas compañías francesas se han ido a Inglaterra dado al menor nivel de papeleo de este país comparado con Francia.
